In meeting with UN Secretary-General;

Rouhani: UN should fulfill its duty towards Yemeni people

Describing Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA) as the symbol of dialogue and cooperation in international stage instead of disagreements, President Rouhani told UN Secretary-General that preserving and bolstering JCPOA is all parties’ duty, as well as the United Nations’.

“JCPOA is a good opportunity for displaying the power of dialogue and bolstering multilateral diplomacy, laying the ground for UN to play its role in settling disagreements,” said President in the meeting that was held on Wednesday local time on the sidelines of the 71st UN General Assembly in New York.

“In this regard, the secretariat is expected to support and facilitate different phases of the implementation of JCPOA,” continued Rouhani.

He added: “If one party fulfils all its duties precisely while the other side is hesitating to do so, this is the biggest flaw in JCPOA and the principle of dialogue”.

On the most important issues of the Middle East region, Dr Rouhani referred to Syrian and Yemeni crises, saying: “In Yemen, continuing military attacks and committing war crimes is extremely worrying as all international conventions in the country continue to be violated”.

“This war against Yemeni people has no base, beginning against all regulations and continuing with bombarding women and children. Most of the impartial international organisations acknowledge that a country has committed war crimes there,” added Rouhani.

He then referred to the Syrian crisis and Iran’s readiness to continue its constructive role in the country and went on saying: “In the process of combating terrorism, the chief point is maintaining sovereignty and integrity of the countries, while in the current situation, humanitarian considerations are the top priority”.

Stressing that UN should fulfil its duty towards Yemeni people despite some pressures, Dr Rouhani said: “The United Nations and the Secretary-General should play their important role in this historic moment”.

He also expressed hope that NAM can be successful achieving its goals based on its statute.

At the meeting, UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon said: “I admire Iran’s excelling management during its presidency over Non-Aligned Movement”.

We urge Iran to play a role in Syrian and Yemeni crises, he added, calling for a more lasting solution to them.
