Indian Shia Muslims demand optional holiday on Eid Ghadir

Members of the Hyderabad Shia community on Monday demanded that the government declare an optional holiday for Eid al-Ghadir on September 21.

HYDERABAD, India (AhlulBayt News Agency) - Members of the Hyderabad Shia community on Monday demanded that the government declare an optional holiday for Eid al-Ghadir on September 21.

According to Syed Hamed Hussain Jaffery from the Shia Youth Conference, the government has declared an optional holiday on September 20 for Eid-e-Ghadeer. But, according to the Islamic calendar, the day corresponds to September 21. Similarly, the Bharatiya Janata Party's Minority Morcha submitted a representation to the Hyderabad district collector's office demanding that the government move the optional holiday from September 20 to September 21.

When contacted, Telangana State Wakf Board chief executive officer Mohammed Asadullah said that the several Shia organizations and members of the community had made representations with the same request.

"We have written to the government informing them of the situation and the representations. A reply is awaited," he said.
