LAHORE, Pakistan (AhlulBayt News Agency) - Punjab Shia Ulema Council (SUC) president Allama Syed Sibtain Haider has said that DPOs and DCOs are taking ‘discriminatory and unlawful steps’ against ‘Azadari’ (mourning for Imam Hussain) on the behest of the Punjab government.
Addressing a press conference at the Lahore Press Club on Tuesday, Allama Sibtain Haider accused the Punjab government of taking coercive actions against mourning for Shia Imams. “Police are interfering in peaceful mourning processions and traditional religious rituals even within the four walls,” he said and warned that no restriction on Azadari would be accepted. He demanded withdrawal of detention orders for Shia activists and cases registered against the organisers of Majalis (mourning ceremonies) and mourning processions during the last year.
He demanded elimination of fourth-schedule being misused to harass peaceful citizens and Shia activists without solid reasons and just to ‘balance with a terrorist takfeeri group’. He said Shia community was committed to protecting fundamental and religious rights guaranteed by the Constitution.
He said SUC leaders always promoted inter-faith harmony and making Azadari controversial was unjustified, which had been a tradition even before the creation of Pakistan. He demanded that the government should make security arrangements for the processions with iron-barriers instead of tents and cloth. He said that the DPOs and DCOs were demanding surety bonds from the Majalis’ organisers and arresting the activists.
