(AhlulBayt News Agency) - A famous human rights lawyer is demanding the release of Nigeria’s detained Shiite leader for medical treatment abroad to save his eyesight and health.

Femi Falana, counsel to the leader of the Islamic Movement in Nigeria, Sheikh Ibrahim El-Zakzaky, has filed a fresh application of urgency before the Federal High Court Abuja.

Falana wants the court to grant El-Zakzaky speedy access to medical treatment in the United Kingdom. The application was filed on August 30, 2016.

In this latest Application, Falana informed the court that the applicant has already lost one eye through gunshots fired at him by the Nigerian Army on December 14, 2015 when armed soldiers invaded his residence in Zaria, Kaduna State.

He further disclosed that there is the fear that he can lose the remaining eye and thereby can go blind completely if the applicant is not urgently freed to seek medical care abroad.

He therefore urged the court to move swiftly and save the applicant’s sight.

Sheikh Zakzaky has been in the custody of the Department of State Services incommunicado ever since with limited access to his immediate family as they said to be holding him in “protective custody”.

The matter is before Justice Gabriel Kolawole of the Federal High Court in Abuja.

Earlier, a motion seeking for the vacation judge to continue with hearing during the court vacation was dismissed.

A date is yet to be fixed for the fresh application.
