(AhlulBayt News Agency) - Muslim Association of Malawi (MAM) has re-elected Sheikh Idrisa Muhammad from Makanjira in Mangochi to lead the association for the next five years after defeating scholar Dr Imran Shareef with with a landslide 114 to 7 votes.
The elections were held at Comesa Hall in Blantyre but were chaotic as supporters of Muhammad and Shariff exchanged blows as they protested against delegates that were allowed to vote.
But according to Sheikh Allie Kennedy said the elections were free and fair.
Sheikh Idrissa said the results of the elections reflect the voice of the Muslim community in Malawi as voters were drawn from all districts of the country and called for unity amongst Muslims in the country, saying Islam is a universal faith.
“Muslims in the country have spoken,” said Muhammed pledging to “ work with everyone.”
The MAM Chairperson advised the Muslim community to change their mindset on development by being patriotic and by having hard working spirit.
“Let us be united, we should not operate as politicians. Politics should not be in the mosque. I also want to ask you Journalists that if there is anything about Muslims in the country consult the MAM authorities for you to be objective in your reporting” advised Sheikh Idrissa.
Idrissa further said he will continue with the projects initiated under his leadership currently underway.
“I want to emphasize here that, I will continue with the projects; schools, hospitals, distribution of relief items with the aim of uplifting the lives of people in the country,” he added.
MAM Patron Sidik Mia, who funded the elections to the rune of K1 million , appealed to Muslims to unite, saying they should “burry the past and work together.”
Positions of of treasure, vice treasurer and vice chairperson were taken by the aspirants unopposed.
