California's Chino Islamic Center holding prayer vigil Sunday night for Orlando shooting victims

CHINO, California AhlulBayt News Agency - A Muslim community here is holding a prayer vigil Sunday evening at Baitul Hameed Mosque, 11941 Ramona Ave., in response to Saturday night’s shooting at an Orlando nightclub.

“Our first reaction as Muslims in any such case is to pray as we are taught,” said Ahsan Khan, president of the Los Angeles East chapter of the Ahmadiyya Muslim Community, which is holding the vigil at 7 p.m. Sunday.

In the Orlando attack, 50 people were killed and at least 53 wounded.

Khan said the community held a similar vigil after the Dec. 2 attack in San Bernardino to bring together the community and to urge calm. Orlando might be far away, but he said it’s the same thing.

“It’s such a distortion of what is true Islam,” Khan said.

Especially disturbing to Khan is that the shooting happened during the holy month of Ramadan, a time when he said Muslims are taught to worship and engage in acts of charity.
