Imam Khamenei: Clerics serve as guides for public opinion, social issues

Leader of the Islamic Revolution has told a group of Seminary School students and clerics a mission for clerics is to provide ‘spiritual guidelines for the public.’

Ayatollah Seyyed Ali Khamenei received a meeting of Tehran’s Seminary Schools students, lecturers and management staff on Saturday where he highlighted on ‘intellectual and religious guidelines,’ ‘political directing and building insight for the public,’ and ‘effective role in social services’ as three most important missions of the clergymen; “the clerical order should prepare themselves for their critical responsibilities in a world hugely different than the immediate past of halcyon days through absorbing knowledge and awareness and other capabilities; the religious guidelines would mean ‘explanation of pure Islamic thought;’ the overwhelming preponderance of the cyberspace in poisoning minds with serious doubts about the nature of Islam along with political motives and vested interests would infuse the young minds with undesirable ideas with devastating consequences,” emphasized the leader, “reactionary Islam which relies on sheer prejudice and preconception without finding a true understanding of spiritual meanings and attaching value to apparent monolithic ideology represents the real side of the deviation from pure Islam.”

“Vis-à-vis this deviation, championed by ‘eclectic Islam’ and ‘American version of Islam,’ is ‘pure Islam’ which relies largely upon the Book and Tradition, and has kept fighting unremittingly to protect the essence of Islam; an understanding of this pure Islam and Islamic thinking tradition and reason would give clergymen their weapons to promote pure Islamic ideology,” the Leader recommended. “Clergymen represent the prophets in perpetuating their path to salvage the humanity; practically directing public to common good requires that the clergymen guide the public in embracing those virtues advertised by the religion, that is, honesty, chastity, avoiding vices and promoting virtues, and Islamic life style,” Ayatollah Khamenei asserted.

The Leader also suggested that improving deeply-rooted beliefs in the minds of the public and to guiding them in desired direction would be important in inculcating in people renewed piety; “without clergymen, Revolutionary ideals would be forlorn, ceasing to stand alive; Tobacco Movement, Constitutional Movement, and Nationalization of Oil Industry would have failed without actively-engaged clergymen,” the Leader told the meeting. “In recent Islamic Awakening, which was a true quake across the Islamic Africa, religion was the strongest driving force behind public demonstrations; however, in countries with disparity of institutions and weak links between religious bodies, the movement failed to progress further,” he noted. “During the Islamic Revolution however, clergymen were the major force out in the field to guide the public on the ground and in social aspects as well after the Revolution,” the Leader concluded.
