AhlulBayt News Agency - A Bahraini Court of Appeals upheld the court of first instance's verdict, sentencing 3 suspects to 5 years in prison. The court also sentenced another suspect to 3 years and acquitted 2 others over charges of assembling and burning tires.
The Public Prosecution accused the 6 suspects (on September 29, 2012) of setting tires ablaze, endangering people's lives and properties, taking part along with other unknown suspects in an assembly of more than 5 people, aiming at disturbing public peace and using violence to achieve the aim they gathered for.
The authorities also claimed that the suspects set tires on fire on the Sheikh Khalifa bin Salman Street and planting "a strange object" at the site, which the authorities said was a gas cylinder connected to wires, alarm and remote control.
Since 2012, riot cases that go under the demonstrations and riot section of the penal code were adapted to apply to the terrorism law, if there were "terrorist" purposes behind them, such as attempted murder of a police officer, violating the provisions of law and endangering the lives of people and their properties, within the regime's framework of harshening penalties against protestors and activists.
