HRW urges EU, US to end detention of Bahraini activist

Human Rights Watch (HRW), an international organization which conducts research and advocacy on human rights, condemned the arrest of Zainab al-Khawaja, a political activist in Bahrain and called for her immediate release.

HRW, reacting to the detention of al-Khawaja and her one-year-old son, in a statement said imprisonment sentence to three years and four months for al-Khawaja is a blatant violation of her right of freedom of speech and the result of an unfair trial.

Joe Stork, HRW deputy director in Middle East and North Africa said al-Khawaja’s detention is a shame to the Government of Bahrain and Manama’s allies should avoid supporting such measures.

He urged the United States and European countries to frankly call for the release of the Bahraini activist.

Zainab al-Khawaja is the daughter of a prominent political activist in Bahrain. Her father is serving a life imprisonment because of anti-government protests in Bahrain in 2011.

Zainab al-Khawaja is in prison on charges including tearing up pictures of King Hamad bin Isa Al Khalifa, King of Bahrain.
