A campaign has been launched on social media by Algerians to boycott this year’s Hajj.
A number of Algeria’s media outlets including the Expression and Bladi newspapers have joined the campaign.
Saudi Arabia’s lack of concern for the lives of Hajj pilgrims as well as Riyadh’s meddling in the affairs of Arab countries like Syria and Yemen have been cited as the reasons behind the initiative.
Those advocating the campaign say the annual Hajj pilgrimage should be boycotted until Saudi Arabia starts paying attention to protection of the pilgrims’ lives and stops its interference in the affairs of the Arab world.
At least 7,500 pilgrims were killed in a crush of people in Mina, near Mecca, on September 24, 2015, during the Hajj rites.
The incident was blamed on the Saudis’ mismanagement of the Hajj affairs.
The incident came nearly two weeks after tens of Hajj pilgrims were killed in another tragic incident in Mecca.
On September 11, a massive construction crane crashed into Mecca’s Grand Mosque in stormy weather, killing at least 107 people and injuring 201 others.
Saudi authorities have come under fire for their inability to ensure the safety of hundreds of thousands of pilgrims who converge on Mecca every year.
