The Islamic Waqf (endowment) Society of Japan recently organized a Quran competition for students.
186 students took part in the competition held in two sections for boys and girls.
Memorization of the entire Quran, memorization of five, two, one, and half a Juz (part) of the Quran and most beautiful recitation were the categories of the contest.
A special committee made up of six Quran experts supervised the contest and judged the participants’ performance.
Winners of the competition were awarded at the closing ceremony, held with the participation of Nasser al-Naeem, director of Islamic-Arabic Center of Tokyo and Sheikh Aqil Sidiqi, head of the Islamic Waqf Society of Japan.
Speakers at the ceremony urged Muslim students to remain steadfast in learning the Quran and acting upon its teachings.
According to some reports, the number of Muslims in Japan is now close to 65,000, most of them expatriates.
Expat Muslims living in Japan are mainly from Indonesia, Bangladesh, and Pakistan.
The Japan Muslim Association puts the number of native Japanese Muslims in the country at around 10,000.
Shinto and Buddhism are the predominant religions of Japan.
