To attract more Muslim tourists to South Korea, the Korea Tourism Organisation (KTO) is increasing the number of Muslim-friendly facilities and certified-halal restaurants.
KTO marketing director for Malaysia and Brunei, Song Sunyong said the initiative was crucial to cater to the needs of Muslim tourists during their time in the country since they were a fast-growing segment in Korea.
"Tourism industry operators like restaurateurs and hoteliers are trying to keep up with the halal standards to ensure they (Muslims) experience a satisfying vacation without worrying about what and where to eat, including prayer places and halal outlets," she told a press conference, here, today.
She said currently, there were six main mosques and five halal-certified restaurants in Itaewon, Seoul.
"Last year, we allocated 20 million won (RM68,385) to upgrade the accommodation for Muslims like introducing wudhu'-friendly section and exclusive prayer place.
"We are looking forward to expand and execute the plan to other major tourist destinations."
Song said since 2013, the Korea Muslim Federation had been working closely with the Malaysia Islamic Development Department (Jakim) for advice and halal certification to gain the trust of international Muslim consumers.
KTO will be one of the major tourism players at the Malaysian Association of Tour and Travel Agents (MATTA) Fair at the Putra World Trade Centre (PWTC) from March 11 to 13.
KTO plaza manager for Malaysia/Brunei, Rya Yahaya said the theme for this year would be the spring flower festivals, the current season in Korea.
"Festivals, namely the Gunsan Cherry Blossom in Jeongungado, Jeju Canola Flower in Jeju Island and Nonsan Strawberry in Chungcheongnam-do will be the events that captivate tourists," said Rya.
She said the attractions at the KTO booths would include gift redemptions for travel package buyers, Korean food demonstrations and Pang Show which included acrobatic, juggling and percussion performances.
Last year, 288,000 Malaysians visited Korea and KTO is expecting a higher number this year.
