AhlulBayt News Agency - An Egyptian Quran reciter was expelled from the country’s al-Azhar University for falsely claiming to have won the top title at Malaysia’s international Quran competition.
The disciplinary committee of Al-Azhar University’s branch in Asyut governorate held a session on Monday to investigate the issue, al-Yawm al-Sabi website reported.
Abdul Rahim Radhi, the young reciter, had claimed in social media that he came first in the last edition of Malaysia’s international Quran competition.
This is while he failed to prove even having left Egypt, let alone taking part in Malaysia’s Quranic event and winning it, the committee said.
The committee then decided to expel him from al-Azhar for undermining the university’s reputation.
Radhi’s claim had already been denied by the Malaysian embassy in Cairo and the Egyptian embassy in Kuala Lumpur.
The latest edition of Malaysia’s International Quran Reciters’ Assembly and Quran Memorizing was held in June 2015.
Iranian reciter Mohsen Haji-Hassani Kargar, 26, won the first place at the competition.
The second prize went to Malaysian reciter Wan Ainuddin Hilmi Abdullah and the third prize was presented to Numan Makasugat Pimbayaba from the Philippines.
