Bahrain's Al Wefaq urges Intl. communities to act against sending scholars into exile

Al-Wefaq National Islamic Society of Bahrain called on the international communities, especially the UN, to take a clear stance against the Al Khalifa regime’s move to expel the country’s religious scholars.

AhlulBayt News Agency - Al-Wefaq National Islamic Society of Bahrain called on the international communities, especially the UN, to take a clear stance against the Al Khalifa regime’s move to expel the country’s religious scholars.

It said in a statement that the move runs counter to Bahrain’s constitution and international laws, Mor’at-ul-Bahrian news website reported.

It came after a Bahraini court upheld a previous verdict on deportation of a member of Bahrain’s Islamic Ulema Council, Sheikh Mohammad Khojasteh.

Al-Wefaq condemned the decision, describing it taking a wrong path which will lead to more tension in society.

It called for respect for religious scholars and their rights instead of targeting and putting pressure on them.

It also regretted that the Bahraini regime is moving against the demands of the international community on resolving the country’s crisis.

Bahrain has been rocked by uprisings since February 2011, with protesters calling on the Al Khalifa family to relinquish power.

Scores of people have been killed and many more arrested in the heavy-handed crackdown on demonstrations.
