AhlulBayt News Agency - Al Wefaq National Islamic Society of Bahrain offers its sincere condolences for the loss of Lord Eric Avebury who supported the cause and rights of the Bahraini people over the past two decades.
"Lord Avebury has imprinted his name in history as a supporter of the truth, always faithful to his principles in a time such persons are rare. His death is a loss not only to the people of Bahrain, but to all free people around our world", "We also offer our deep condolences to his family and friends", Al-Wefaq expressed.
Lord Avebury, the former Liberal MP and renowned human rights campaigner, has died age 87.
The politician was the longest-serving Liberal Democrat member of the House of Lords. He took his place in the upper chamber after losing his seat in the Commons in 1970.
Avebury had been suffering from myelofibrosis, a form of blood cancer, for more than a year and had spoken publicly in support of assisted dying, expressing the hope that the practice would be legalised before his own death.
