More than 150 volunteers helped a Muslim charity hand out food and winter clothing to an estimated 1,200 needy Calgarians in Canada on Sunday.
The Muslim Families Network Society (MFNS), a Calgary non-profit, provided canned food, warm clothing and grocery gift cards to newly arrived Syrian refugees. But the charity also helped many others.
“We are making no distinction; we are serving everybody who is in need,” said Idrees Khan, chairwoman of the society.
Newly arrived Syrians had more than 10 family members, all in need of help, Khan said.
Volunteers handed out donated food and clothing at the Marlborough Park Community Centre throughout the day. The charity handed out non-perishable food, new and gently used winter clothing, toys and $25 grocery store gift cards so families could buy produce and other necessities.
Last year, the charity served more than 4,500 people through two distribution events and its food bank.
The events cater to Muslim children and families who are underprivileged, though its services are available to anyone in Calgary who is in need.
