Iranian Interior Minister Abdolreza Rahmani Fazli gave an assurance that full security prevails along the country’s borders with Iraq as huge crowds of Iranian pilgrims are travelling to the Arab country for the Arbaeen rituals.
Speaking at a press conference on Saturday, the minister said there has not been a single report about anti-security measures along the borders with Iraq.
While some 1.3 million people have crossed the border so far, the situation is fully under control and all moves are being monitored by the security forces, he underlined.
Rahmani Fazli added that only two people have been arrested for “misguiding propaganda” in the convoys, and 50 others have been also captured for illegal entry into Iraq.
Those 50 travelers were identified in the first checkpoint in Iraq and returned to Iran, he added.
Predicting that a total of around 2 million pilgrims will travel to Iraq for Arbaeen, Rahmani Fazli once again noted that an Iraqi visa is mandatory for going on the pilgrimage.
The Arbaeen mourning ceremony is one of the largest religious gatherings in the world.
It marks the 40th day after the martyrdom anniversary of the grandson of Prophet Mohammad (PBUH), Imam Hussein (AS).
Each year, pilgrims, mainly from Iraq and Iran, travel long routes on foot to Karbala, where the holy shrine of Imam Hussein (AS) is located.
Last year, around 20 million pilgrims from all over the world gathered in Karbala on Arbaeen.
