British muslim woman thanks train passengers who defended her from racist abuse

A Newcastle woman has thanked a carriage of train passengers for defending her against anti-Muslim abuse last weekend.

A Newcastle woman has thanked a carriage of train passengers for defending her against anti-Muslim abuse last weekend.

Ruhi Rahman was sitting on the Tyne and Wear Metro when a man started making racially abusive and threatening comments against her and her sister.

In a Facebook post, Ruhi explained how she was sitting on the train when the man approached her demanding she give up her seat.

He then referred to her ‘bombing different countries’ before other passengers started stepping in:

The 23-year-old thanked her fellow passengers for being ‘such sweet people’ for taking a stand against the bullying behaviour:

"It was so sweet to see how everyone in the metro got the man off and then clapped at the end. It really shows me how this world is full of such sweet people and some dogs too.

"It made me smile and appreciate how lovely they all were."

Ruhi reported the incident to Northumbria police, who confirmed they are investigating the matter.

Metro Inspector Ian King said:

“Northumbria Police take a hard stance against any form of attack on any minority group or individual and officers will be investigating this report.”

According to reports from The Independent, in the week following the Paris attacks, there have been 115 incidents of racial abuse against British Muslims.
