Al Khalifa regime to return body of killed boy to family

The body of a Bahraini teenager who was killed in a bomb explosion near the capital Manama on Wednesday will be delivered to his family, activists say.

The teenage boy was killed in an explosion while allegedly attempting to plant a bomb near the Bahraini capital, Manama, according to the country’s Interior Ministry.

The blast occurred in the village of Eker east of Manama.

The Interior Ministry claims 18-year-old Qaasim Mohsen intended to plant a bomb himself. However, Bahrain's main opposition bloc, the al-Wefaq Society, said shortly after the ministry’s statement that it was still looking into the “suspicious incident.”

Meanwhile, Bahraini activists have called on people to attend his funeral en masse. Demonstrations have also been called to demand the government explain what activists called the truth about his death.

The government has repeatedly been accused of refusing to properly investigate cases such as Wednesday’s explosion.

Eker has been a flashpoint for clashes between anti-government protesters and regime forces.

Since mid-February 2011, thousands of anti-regime protesters have held numerous demonstrations on the streets of Bahrain, calling for the Al Khalifa family to relinquish power.

Scores of Bahrainis have been killed and hundreds of others injured or arrested in the ongoing crackdown on peaceful pro-democracy demonstrations.
