Iran, Australia Share Stance on Fighting Terrorism: MP

An Iranian parliamentarian hailed the common approaches of Iran and Australia to combating the threat of terrorism.

The two countries have mutual stances on confronting terrorism and can play an effective role in developing global peace, Rasoul Khezri, who is a member of Iran-Australia Parliamentary Friendship Group, said Sunday in a meeting with Australian envoy to Tehran, Paul Foley.

Khezri further described Iran and Australia as two major and influential countries that have many potentials for developing bilateral ties.

He added that Iran’s parliament welcomes any effort aimed at promoting Tehran-Canberra relations in economic, health, welfare and other fields.

Foley, for his part, referred to the history of “positive” relations between the two states and hoped for the expansion of bilateral ties.

He also hailed the ongoing talks between Iran and world powers over Tehran’s civilian nuclear program, and expressed the hope that with the success of the negotiations, anti-Iran sanctions will be lifted.

Iran and the Group 5+1 (Russia, China, the US, Britain, France and Germany), are in talks to hammer out a lasting accord that would end more than a decade of impasse over Tehran's peaceful nuclear program.

On April 2, the two sides reached a framework nuclear agreement in Lausanne, Switzerland, with both sides committed to push for a final deal until the end of June.

Diplomats from Iran and the EU wrapped up the latest round of negotiations in New York and are slated to resume the talks in Vienna on May 12 to press on with the task of drafting the comprehensive deal.
