Abu Ja'far Muhammad ibn Yaqoub al-Kolayni, known as Sheikh Kolayni, was born in or around 250 AH in the village of Kolayn located at 37 kilometers from the city of Rey in southern Tehran.

Ahlul Bayt News Agency - Abu Ja'far Muhammad ibn Yaqoub al-Kolayni, known as Sheikh Kolayni, was born in or around 250 AH in the village of Kolayn located at 37 kilometers from the city of Rey in southern Tehran.

He was he the most well-known scholar of Islamic law and Shia academic of Hadith in the first half of the fourth century AH.

He acquired his basic religious education in his hometown, and his teachers included Ali ibn Ibrahim Qomi, a respected commentator of the Holy Qur'an. Kolayni belonged to a family of muhaddithun (traditionists) and fuqaha (Islamic jurists). He spent the major part of his life in the 3rd century AH, and hence he is known as Mujaddid (reviver) of the 3rd century.

He was already called 'Thiqat al-Islam' (Trusted by Islam) by Shias and non-Shias alike before he moved to Baghdad, and there he was given the title 'Sheikh al-Foqaha' (Sheikh of the Jurists).

Sheikh Kolayni is famous for 'Al-Kaafi' (The Sufficient Book) which is a Twelver Shia hadith collection. The book is divided into three sections: 'Osoul al-Kaafi', which is concerned with epistemology, theology, history, ethics, supplication, and the Qur'an, 'Furou al-Kaafi' which is concerned with practical and legal issues, and 'Rawdat al-Kaafi' which includes miscellaneous traditions, many of which are lengthy letters and speeches transmitted from the Imams.

'Rasa'il al-A'emmah', 'Kitab al-Rijal', 'Kitab al-Radd' 'Ala al-Qarami'ah', 'Kitab Ta'biral-ru'ya' are among the other works by Sheikh Kolayni.

Sheikh Kolayni died in 328 or 329 AH and was buried in Baghdad
