The Malacca state government plans to disallow the sale of alcohol in convenience stores in predominantly Muslim areas.
If you live in a predominantly Muslim neighbourhood, do not expect to walk into a convenience store near you anytime soon for your next slug of whisky.
If the Malacca state government has its way, it will ban store owners from selling alcohol in areas where Muslims make up 90% of the residents.
Chief minister Idris Haron said the state government was currently reviewing the sale of alcohol in 76 convenience stores there.
“We only allow selling of alcohol in convenience stores that are located in areas with a Muslim population that is below 90 per cent,” he was quoted as saying.
He also confirmed that this has been agreed to by all parties concerned including the management of convenience stores in the state and that action was to be taken immediately.
Alcohol is prohibited in Islam.
