The Bahraini Authority has decided to keep in custody Sheikh Ali Salman, Secretary General of Al Wefaq National Islamic Society, despite the state’s failure to bring an evident case against him. Salman is being prosecuted for his criticism of autocracy and corruption and his demands to build a real state in Bahrain.
The Authority’s court has adjourned his hearing to 25th February. Journalists and political and rights activists were prevented from entering the courtroom today.
Al Wefaq stresses that the continued detention of the national leader, Sheikh Ali Salman, deepens the gap between the regime and the people. Further, it demonstrates the regime’s inability to coexist with its people who have continued to call for their universal political rights under a security fist, for decades.
It is most necessary for the Authority in Bahrain to realize the urgency of a political settlement instead of the countless reprisal against dissidents of the autocratic rule.
The arrest of Sheikh Ali Salman, as part of the targeting of opposition leaders, may lead to catastrophic results and harm stability in Bahrain.
The charges brought against Salman were widely denounced for lack of credibility as he is known to be a prominent advocate of peace and reform.
The continued detention of Sheikh Ali burdens the international community with a moral responsibility to declare a clear position from the ongoing unfair trials against prisoners of conscience in Bahrain.
