Iran is cataloging Persian and Islamic manuscripts kept at the Institute of Oriental Manuscripts of the Russian Academy of Sciences in St. Petersburg.

So far, over 1000 titles have been registered by Persian manuscript expert Hossein Mottaqi, who has been assigned by Iran’s Islamic Culture and Relations Organization (ICRO) to catalog the books, the ICRO announced in a press release on Saturday.

He began listing the books in early December in 2014. The Iranian cultural attaché’s office in Moscow also supports the project.

He shares his experiences during this task and explains about the manuscripts of the institute on his personal website on basatin.kateban.com.

Over 4000 Persian and Islamic manuscripts are kept at the institute as well as the National Library of Russia, the Saint Petersburg State University and the Central State Historical Archive of St. Petersburg.

The Institute of Oriental Manuscripts (IOM) of the Russian Academy of Sciences (RAS), formerly the St. Petersburg Branch of the Institute of Oriental Studies of the Russian Academy of Sciences, is a research institute in Saint Petersburg that houses various collections of manuscripts and early printed material in Asian languages, including Arabic, Chinese, Mongolian, Tibetan and Tangut.
