Bahrain Al Wefaq National Islamic Society outlines that the statements made by the Minister of Interior contradict with the statements issued by the Public Prosecution Office. The Minister’s statements also prove that Sheikh Ali Salman was arrested for political reasons relating to his opinion to boycott the parliamentary and municipal elections.
The statements reveal that the real reason behind the detention of Al Wefaq SG is the society’s boycott of the elections. Al Wefaq reminds that the constitution and international law guarantee for each citizen right to boycott or participate in elections.
Al Wefaq underlines that it has exercised its natural political role as an official and legal association and in accordance with international laws and covenants.
Al Wefaq has always been, and will remain, the first sponsor and supporter to the peaceful option for movement. This is a life-long choice of Sheikh Ali Salman who contributed to the issuance of the Nonviolence Principles Declaration and explicitly called on the people to adhere to the peaceful approach in more than 200 times.
Al Wefaq stresses that Sheikh Ali Salman must be immediately released and the Authority in Bahrain must move toward a real political solution based on power-sharing and citizenship.
