A senior Iraq-based Shi’a cleric underlined that Shi’a sources of emulation have time and again underlined that insulting the sanctities of Sunni Muslims is forbidden.

Ayatollah Bashir al-Najafi made the remark in response to a request by the president of Egypt’s al-Azhar University for a ban on desecrating religious sanctities, Iran's Quran News Agency reported.

al-Azhar’s Shaykh Ahmad al-Tayyeb made the call in a meeting with an Iranian envoy in Cairo, Hujjat al-Islam Ahmad Moballeghi.

The Supreme Leader of the Islamic Revolution, Ayatollah Sayyed Ali Khamenei, issued a fatwa (religious edict) a few years ago which bans insulting the Sunni sanctities.

The fatwa was welcomed and praised by Sunni scholars in various countries.
