Grand Ayatollah Ja’far Sobhani noted that it is unfortunate that there are still some extremist books which are being taught in a number of Islamic schools. These extremist teachings create division, terrorism and murder.
Ayatollah Sobhani made the remarks during a meeting with Hujjat al-Islam Ahmad Moballeghi, the envoy of the Islamic Republic of Iran to the “International Conference on Fighting Extremism,” which took place in Cairo during December 3-4 at the invitation of Egypt’s renowned al-Azhar University.
He called on scholars of Islam to work to repair the deteriorating intellectual conditions in a number of Muslim countries, saying: “We will not end terrorism and Takfirism in the Islamic world unless we eliminate their foundations and drain their resources. The scholars have a great responsibility in this area.”
Ayatollah Sobhani explained the importance of the anti-extremism conference held at al-Azhar University and explained that it is unfortunate that a group of terrorists in the region are killing innocent people with the support of the enemies of Islam. “The presence of scholars from throughout the Islamic world condemning terrorism sends an important message to the world,” he explained.
In turn, Hujjat al-Islam Moballeghi gave a detailed report on the implications of the anti-terrorism conference and the atmosphere prevailing at al-Azhar, saying: “al-Azhar is known for its moderation, and by addressing the issue of rapprochement between Islamic sects that will lead to good results.”
The International Conference on Fighting Extremism was organized by al-Azhar University. Representatives from both Shi’ite and Sunni Muslim communities, as well as Sabeans, took part in the gathering. The conference was aimed at countering threats posed by Takfiri groups and promoted peace, friendship, brotherhood and interaction among the different Islamic sects.
