South Korea Seeks to Attract More Muslim Tourists

Gyeonggi Tourism Organisation (GTO) overseas marketing ‎team assistant manager Oh Jung-Chul said many tourist attractions and local restaurants are trying to be more Muslim-friendly to cater to the needs of these tourists.

The authorities in Gyeonggi province, South Korea, are taking the initiative to attract more Muslim tourists, including Malaysians, to the province.

The authorities aim to tap into the Muslim tourists market to show what they have to offer, the Sun Daily reported.

Gyeonggi Tourism Organisation (GTO) overseas marketing ‎team assistant manager Oh Jung-Chul said many tourist attractions and local restaurants are trying to be more Muslim-friendly to cater to the needs of these tourists.

"For Muslim travelers, being able to (perform their) prayers and eating (Halal food) are important, so they need to feel safe and secure to travel to places that give them such security," he said.

"We want to assure Muslim tourists that there are food that is halal for them to consume and places where they can privately pray," he said.

He said there were some 550,000 Muslim yearly visitors from countries that include Malaysia, Indonesia, Singapore and the Middle East.

Oh said GTO sees a growing number of Muslim tourists to the country and aims to increase the figure over the next few years.

"Muslim travelers can expect to enjoy the theme parks, ski resorts and other tourist attractions," he said.

He said GTO would work with tourist agencies to promote Muslim-friendly tourists attractions, as well as produce pamphlets to promote these places.
