A car bomb went off in Al-Mahmoudiya district, south of Baghdad, on Sunday.
It targeted Shia pilgrims who were heading south to the holy city of Karbala to commemorate Arbaeen, a day in the lunar Hijri calendar marking 40 days after the martyrdom anniversary of Imam Hussein (AS), the grandson of Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) and the third Shia Imam.
There was another terrorist attack on Shia Muslims in al-Sha’ab district, north of Baghdad.
The attacks came as millions of Shia Muslims from across the globe are making their way toward the holy city of Karbala.
The annual mourning services to mark Imam Hussein’s (AS) martyrdom are held worldwide since the beginning of Muharram.
These ceremonies symbolize eternal and unwavering stance of truth against falsehood and humanity’s struggle against injustice, tyranny and oppression, the cause for which Imam Hussein (AS) was martyred.
