A prominent Yemeni scholar underlined that some 120 verses of the Holy Quran urge Muslims to stand united.

Addressing a conference about the threat of Takfir and extremism, Sheikh Sharafeddin Shamseddin added that these verses should be implemented by Muslims and that followers of Islam should not allow the differences to overshadow the common grounds.

He warned against Takfir (considering fellow Muslims as infidels) and said no one can call other Muslims Kafirs (disbelievers).

Referring to the spread of Takfiri groups like the so-called Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant (ISIL), Sheikh Shamseddin said the world should know that such groups do not represent Islam in any way.

The World Conference on Extremist and Takfiri Movements in Islamic Scholars’ View opened on Sunday in Iran’s central holy city of Qom.

More than 600 Muslim scholars from over 80 countries attended the two-day event. According to reports, 40 percent of the participants were Shias and 60 percent Sunnis.

The gathering’s objective is countering Takfiri groups and calling for peace, friendship, brotherhood and interaction among different faiths.
