As schools open doors for a new year for students, the chairman of Bahrain Teachers Association, Mahdi Abu Deeb, remains behind bars for exercising freedom of expression and opinion.

The Education Department in Al Wefaq National Islamic Society calls on the Bahraini Authority to release Abu Deeb who is considered a prisoner of conscience. The Education Department also calls for both Mahdi Abu Deeb, and his deputy Jalila Alsalman, to be reinstated in their jobs and redressed for the violations they have been subjected to.

We also call on students to double their efforts to gain excellent grades despite the sectarian discrimination in the distribution of scholarships. The Ministry of Education has recently closed all doors in the face students who have gained excellent grades by tightening restrictions to obtain scholarships from civil institutions, businesses and diplomatic embassies.

We also call on all Bahraini teachers to document all violations and sectarian practices committed by the Ministry of Education.

Finally, we congratulate students and teachers for the new year and wish them all the best.
