Sawwal 15 is concurrent with the departure anniversary of Hazrat Abd al-Azim Hassani (S.A.), the envoy and narrator of the Infallible Imams (A.S.). Abd al- Azim Hassani (S.A.) was a prominent scientific and jihadi figure who was well- known for his piety.

According to news from Astan Quds Razavi website, Hazrat Abd al- Azim Hassani (S.A.) is son of Abdullah ibn-i Ali, a descendent from Imam Hassan Mujtaba (A.S.) after four generations. He was born in 173 A.H. in Medina and during his blessed long life of 79 years lived in the age of four Imams including Imam Musa Kazem (A.S.), Imam Reza (A.S.), Imam Javad (A.S.), and Imam Hadi (A.S.) making advantage of blessings of these Imams.

Descent of Abd al-Azim Hassani (S.A.)

Abd al- Azim Hassani (S.A.) is known as “Hassani” since he descends from Imam Hassan (A.S.), the prophet’s grandson. He would travel constantly to escape the enemy while also he would spread the pure knowledge of the prophet (S.A.W.). At the end of his trips, he arrived in Rey and settled in the basement of a Shi’ite man. Soon he became popular among the Shi’as for his piety and knowledge and began to answer their religious questions. People came to him enthusiastically to make use of his knowledge and smell the scent of the Infallible Imams (A.S.) from him.

Scientific and pious character of Abd al- Azim Hassani (S.A.)

A main feature of his character was his scientific position. Besides narrating traditions from the contemporary Imams (A.S.) he has compiled several books as well. “Sermons of Imam Ali (A.S.)” and “Day and night” are among the precious works of Abd al-Azim Hassani (S.A.). He was always respected and trusted by the contemporary Imams of his age. It is said that a person named Aba Hamad Razi reached Samara after a troublesome trip in order to ask some questions from Imam Hadi (A.S.). After answering his question, Imam Hadi (A.S.) told him, “Aba Hamad, whenever you come across a religious problem, ask it from Abd al-Azim Hassani (S.A.) and also send my greeting to him.

Imam Reza’s recommendation to Abd al-Azim Hassani (S.A.)

Abd al-Azim Hassani (S.A.) made use of the blessed presence of Imam Reza (A.S.) to take scientific and spiritual benefit and convey his recommendations to the Shi’as. Once Imam Reza (A.S.) told him, “Abd al-Azim Hassani (S.A.), send my greeting to my friends and tell them not to give in Satan. Recommend them about honesty, trustworthiness, and avoiding dispute in vain, meeting each other, and caring about each other, as these actions will cause their closeness to me. Do not involve in hostility with each other. I have pledged that anyone who does so and angers one of my friends may God torture him in the worst shape and take him in the Hereafter as a loser.”

Departure of Abd al-Azim Hassani (S.A.)

Shi’ite in that age led a difficult life because of the then caliphates. Abd al-Azim Hassani (S.A.) lived secretly in the basement of a Shi’ite man. He fasted days and prayed at nights. After a while, he became ill and soon passed away. When bathing (Ghusl) him, a sheet was found in his clothing that revealed his descent: “I am Aba al-Qasim, son of Abdullah, son of Ali, son of Hassan, son of Zeid, son of Imam Hassan (A.S.), son of Ali ibn-i Abi Talib (A.S.).”

After Abd al-Azim Hassani (S.A.) died, a man came to Imam Hadi (A.S.). Imam (A.S.) asked him where he was. He answered, “I had gone on the pilgrimage of Imam Hussein (A.S.). Imam (A.S.) said, “If you visited the tomb of Abd al-Azim Hassani (S.A.) that is near you, you were as the same as one who visits the tomb of Imam Hussein (A.S.)”.

This tradition is quoted by Sheikh Saduq.
