A senior Egyptian religious figure has condemned the Israeli military operations against the besieged Gaza Strip as “crimes against humanity,” calling for an immediate end to them.

The Israeli ground assault against the Palestinians violates international conventions and laws; and… killing children, demolishing homes and displacement of families are crimes against humanity, Grand Imam of Al-Azhar Ahmed al-Tayeb said in a press statement on Saturday.

Al-Tayeb called on the Organization of Islamic Cooperation (OIC), Arab League, UN Security Council and all human rights organizations, particularly children’s right organizations, to move swiftly to stop the Israeli aggression against the Palestinian people.

Israeli warplanes have been carrying out incessant airstrikes against Gaza since July 8. On Thursday, thousands of Israeli soldiers launched a ground invasion into the densely-populated strip as well.

Hamas has vowed that Tel Aviv will “pay a high price” for its “foolish” actions.

A total of 357 people have been killed by the Israeli regime in its recent war on Gaza and nearly 2,700 have been wounded.

On Saturday, the United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF) expressed “deep concern” over the death of children killed in the Israeli offensives against Gaza.
