Moroccan Monarch Bans Religious Leaders from Political Activity

Moroccan-Monarch-Bans-Religious-Leaders-from-Political-Activity Morocco's King Mohammed VI has issued a decree banning the country's imams and prayer leaders from political activities.

According to the decree, which was signed by the king on June 4, religious leaders, imams and preachers are no longer allowed to take public political stances or join political parties, lemag website reported.
The decree also called on those working in the country's religious institutions to display “characteristics of poise, righteousness and prowess.”
It comes in the context of what Rabat called reforms in the religious field which were launched in the wake of terrorist attacks that struck Casablanca in 2003.
Political analysts, however, believe that Morocco's ruler has learned a lesson from what happened to the rulers of Egypt and Tunisia and by issuing the decree wants to prevent Islamists from participating in politics in order to secure his power.
Popular uprisings in 2011 led to the ouster of former Egyptian dictator Hosni Mubarak and Tunisian autocrat Zine El Abidine Ben Ali.
