Muslims around the world began their observance of the holy month of Ramadan at sundown Friday, with fasting starting Saturday. For the next 29 or 30 days, more than 1.3 billion people, or 23 percent of the world’s population, plan to take part in the religious practice of fasting from pre-dawn to dusk each day. Ramadan is considered the holiest month of the Islamic calendar and commemorates the revelation of the Holy Qur’an to the Prophet Muhammad.
