Algeria's Awqaf Minister Muhammad Issa said it was planned to be completed in 48 months but the contractor has failed to fulfill its obligations.
The construction of the mosque, which will be the largest mosque in the world after Masjid Al-Haram in Makkah and the Holy Prophet's (PBUH) Mosque in Medina, started in 2012.
Almost as tall as the Eiffel Tower, the $1.3-billion mosque will stand on 20 hectares of land and will be capable of hosting 120,000 worshippers within its prayer room. Its minaret will soar 270 meters high.
It will also feature a library containing one million books and manuscripts, a museum and a research center.
