Sayed Hadi Almusawi, head of Liberties and Human Rights Department in Al Wefaq National Islamic Society, said he is to deliver a copy of his department’s human rights report for 2013 to the delegations meeting in the Human Rights Council 26th session in Geneva. The report includes the violations perpetrated by the Bahraini regime in 2013 as documented by the LHRD.
Almusawi pointed out that Bahrain had promised to end and address these violations 2 years ago.
He said, “Some delegations have already received a copy and encouraged us to continue this professional rights methodology”. He mentioned that Ms. Navi Pillay, the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights, will receive copy of the report.
Almusawi mentioned that Bahraini activists attending the HRC session discussed the prosecution of Khalil Almarzooq, Political Assistant of Secretary-General in Al Wefaq, in their meetings with concerned officials and delegations. He said Almarzooq’s case is an example of the Bahraini Authority’s targeting of activists and dissidents. The meetings also discussed the repression of peaceful demonstrations and freedom of expression.
Almusawi mentioned that these meetings will focus on the concerns listed in the joint-statement that was signed by 47 States and read out in the HRC’s 26th session on Tuesday. The States urged Bahrain to guarantee of fair trials and to stop targeting political and rights activists and peaceful protesters. They also urged to establish a country office for the OHCHR and to reschedule pending visits for the HRC Special Procedures.
