Today, 12 days have passed since the death of the martyr Abdulazziz Alabbar, who died of a head injury. Yet, the family has not received a death certificate documenting the true reason of death. Alabbar was shot to the head, by security forces, with birdshot and a teargas grenade last February.
Al Wefaq National Islamic Society said the regime’s attempt to hide the true reason of death reveals the systematic impunity it is adopting. “The regime’s inhumane and irresponsible dealing with the family of Alabbar, by attempting to protect killers, makes the calls for independent and impartial trials necessary”, Al Wefaq stressed.
“In Bahrain, dissidents are subjected to repression and retaliation, while human rights violators and killers are protected from accountability”, Al Wefaq added, “The security solution the regime is adopting complicates the situation, the crisis can only be resolved through a political solution”.
This is not the first time the regime keeps the bodies of its victims in custody for the same reason.
The body of the citizen journalist Ahmed Ismail, 22, was kept in regime custody for more than 12 days. Ahmed was shot by regime gunmen with live ammunition during a protest late March 2012. The regime refused to include the reason of death in his death certificate.
Salah Abbas, aged 36, was assassinated for his peaceful street activism calling for a democratic State. Salah was severely tortured and beaten by security forces during a crackdown on a protest on 19th April 2012. He was then shot dead. His body was received by the family on 23rd April because again, the regime was refusing to mention the reason of death.
Twenty year old Mahmood Aljazeeri died due to a head injury he sustained during police crackdown on a protest on 14thFebruary 2013. His body was also kept in regime custody for 12 days for the same reason.
