Issuing a statement on Monday, the council (known as Olamaa Islamic Council) underlined that Sheikh Qassem has a lofty status among the Bahrainis and that insulting him is insulting all of the country’s Shias, olamaa.cc website reported. It also criticized Bahrain’s judiciary and justice ministry for failing to take proper actions against such moves.
The Persian Gulf country of Bahrain has been hit by political turmoil since mid-February 2011, with protesters calling on the Al Khalifa regime to relinquish power.
The regime has suppressed the peaceful demonstrations ever since and has particularly targeted the country’s majority Shia population.
