(Ahlul Bayt News Agency) - As the world celebrates the International Women’s Day on March 8th, the Bahraini women are subjected to various forms of persecution and oppression and that has not stopped since February 14, 2011. Early 2014, Asma Hussein passed away after witnessing a terrifying home raid by the security forces, making the number of female martyrs to around 31 since 2011.As the United Nations celebrates this day under the slogan, “Struggle for equality, justice, peace and development”, the Women Affairs Unit in Al Wefaq National Islamic Society in Bahrain calls on all rights organisations to put pressure on the Bahraini regime to give Bahraini women their political, social and economic rights far from any discrimination or violence in order to guarantee a secure life and stable future in a democratic State. The Women Affairs Unit calls on rights organisations to act to eradicate the systematic and vengeful oppression practiced by the State against women for their activisim and support to regime-dissent in demand for democracy and justice. The Bahraini women are capable of change, they must be politically, socially and economically enabled through internationally- known stratigies and programs putting them in desicion-making positions to contribute to the construction of a modern and democratic state. We urge all women in the world , especcially those in desicion-making positions, to take a geniune stance to stop the continuing violations against women in Bahrain. The Women Affairs Unit in Al Wefaq has sent an open letter to Ms. Navi Pillay, the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights, as well as Ms. Catherine Ashton, the EU High Representative for Foreign Affairs, and Ms. Angela Merkel, the German Chancellor, as women in decision-making positions and aware of the violations practiced against Bahraini women.Women in Bahrain have been and still are subjected to verbal abuse at checkpoints and during terrifying home raids carried out by the security forces and civilian militias. Many have been arrested for expressing their opinion and some are facing fabricated accusations before Bahrain’s widely criticized judiciary. While the Supreme Council for Women in Bahrain constatnly speaks about the importance of supporting women in the executive and legislative authorities and political-enabling of women achievements, a number of women remain in jail and subjected to torture and maltreatment. The reality of the situation in Bahrain reveals the balatant discrimination in jobs, edcuation, scholarship and state-institutions, making it ever hard for Bahraini women to achieve their aspirations and threatening their future.March 8, 2014Women Affairs UnitAl Wefaq National Islamic Society/149
