(Ahlul Bayt News Agency) - Al Wefaq National Islamic Society in Bahrain commends the contents of the US State Department report. Al Wefaq considers the report a realistic description of the prolematic and fragile situation in Bahrain.Al Wefaq agrees with the statement that “the most serious human rights problems include citizens’ inability to change their government peacefully”. Indeed, the current assigned (unelected) government has been in office over 43 years now and it is the longest serving government on (in) the world today. This is despite the fact that it lacks popular mandate and is not accepted by the majority of the people of Bahrain who have made thousands of sacrificies including martyrs, prisoners along with the wounded and dismissed, on the path to democracy where the people can form their government and enjoy sovereignty.Al Wefaq confirms discrimination continues to be practiced against Shiites in Bahrain as mentioned in the Department’s report. The official discrimination against Shiite citizens has widened to include all State-institutions.Alwefaq underlines the arbitrary arrests and detention of protesters on vague charges, and lack of due processes in trials of political and human rights activists. In many cases, leading to torture in detention, some even to death. Alwefaq, also, confirms the arbitrary and extrajudicial deprivation of life perpetrated by the security forces as around 130 death cases have been documented by Al Wefaq.Al Wefaq confirms the types of torture mentioned in the State Department report, including electric shocks, beating, simulated drowning, sexual harassment, the threat of rape, sleep deprivation, standing for long periods and other.Alwefaq emphasises the fact that the vast majority of the people of Bahrain are insistent to nonviolent protests aiming to achieve a intrinsic democratic change and to build a state where the will of the people and their fundamental and universal rights are fully respected. It is the only way forward to resolve the fragile political status qou.Al Wefaq also highlights the need for all political powers who believe in democratic principles to push towards empowering the people to be the source of all powers in Bahrain as this is the only way out of the chronic political and constitutional crisis. Al Wefaq calls on the international community, especially the United Nations, to participate in resolving the political and human rights crisis in Bahrain by taking similar measures as those taken against countries with bad human rights records and that show no commitment to the international conventions and obligations. The UNSC’s recent resolution on the situation in Yemen, regarding those who block political solution and roadmap, can be a guideline to the international community to act in respect to Bahrain by helping the Bahrainis write a democratic constitution together with the achievement of national reconciliation and transitional justice./129
