2013 Worst Human Rights Year for Saudis: Activist

A Saudi activist says the year 2013 has been "one of the worst years” for human rights in Saudi Arabia.

(Ahlul Bayt News Agency) - "If we wait another seven to 10 years, we will be in a more dangerous situation than Egypt and Syria… What we need to do is fix it before it's too late," Abdulaziz Alhussain, a rights lawyer who has fled to the United States, told The Associated Press on Wednesday.

"The government has no option but to reconcile with its own people," he said, calling for “accountability and transparency within government."

On December 20, the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights expressed "deep concern" over the "intimidation and prosecution of individuals in Saudi Arabia for exercising certain fundamental freedoms."

Last week, Human Rights Watch also published a report saying the harassment of activists by the Saudi government has been redoubled since early 2011.

Activists say there are more than 40,000 political prisoners in Saudi Arabia.

In October, rights group Amnesty International censured Saudi authorities for not addressing the “dire human rights situation” in the kingdom.

The group also presented the UN with a document that included information on a “new wave of repression against civil society, which has taken place over the last two years.”
