Multiple bombs target visitors to Karbala in run up to Arbaeen, kiled 10 Shias

A reported four bomb blasts have rocked the Holy City of Karbala, on Tuesday, as Shia Muslim pilgrims gather to mark the Arbaeen period.

(Ahlul Bayt News Agency) One car bomb and two mortar explosions have been reported with reports of a 4th explosion. The bombs are believed to have exploded in quick succession. No deaths or injuries have been reported as of yet. The bombs were detonated in areas outside the two Holy Shrines of Al Hussain and Al Abbas, but could be heard from inside the shrines and across the small Holy City.

Reports of the bomb blasts are being communicated from various sources on Twitter. It is has been said that many pilgrims, in an act of defiance, left their accommodation to pour onto the streets of the Holy City, chanting slogans in a show of unity and strength. One pilgrim from the UK tweeted the following:

“The bombs went off, all of shari3 ilqibla went quiet and looked towards Imam Alhussain (as) for a good 2 mins in silence. After that, the whole area was screaming “Labaika Ya Hussain””

Picture above, posted on an Instagram account, apparently shows the moment in which a bomb exploded, however it cannot be verified.

Bombings kill 10 Shiite pilgrims in Iraq

Bombings in and near Baghdad killed 10 Shiite pilgrims on Tuesday as they were making their way on foot to a holy city in southern Iraq, officials said.

In the deadlier of the two attacks, a suicide bomber set off his explosive belt among a group of pilgrims south of Baghdad, near the town of Mahmoudiya. That attack killed six people and wounded 16, police officials said.

The pilgrims were headed to the city of Karbala, 90 kilometers (55 miles) to the south, to commemorate Arbaeen, the end of 40 days of mourning following the anniversary of the death of the Prophet Muhammad's grandson, Imam Hussein, a revered Shiite figure.

About two hours earlier, a bomb blast struck another group of Shiite pilgrims in Baghdad, also on their way to Karbala. That bombing, in the southeastern neighborhood of New Baghdad, killed four people and wounded 11, the police officials said.

Medical officials confirmed the casualty figures. All officials spoke on condition of anonymity because they were not authorized to talk to media.

In Iraq, hundreds of thousands of Shiite pilgrims make their way every year to Karbala for Arbaeen. Al-Qaida and other Sunni Muslim insurgents frequently target the Shiites, whom they consider to be infidel. Also, the Shiite marches to holy cities are typically poorly protected by Iraqi security forces.

Tuesday's bombings came a day after two separate attacks on Shiite pilgrims in Iraq killed 34 people.

There was no immediate claim of responsibility but the attacks were the latest in a wave of violence that has roiled Iraq since a security crackdown in April on a protest camp in a northern Sunni town.
