(Ahlul Bayt News Agency) A wave of violent attacks across Iraq on Sunday killed 42 people and wounded 152, raising fears that terrorist groups and militia could bring the country to uncontrollable sectarian violence.
The deadliest attacks occurred in the Iraqi capital of Baghdad when ten car bombs ripped through predominantly Shiite districts, killing a total of 38 people and wounding some 146 people.
In one of Baghdad attacks, a car bomb exploded at the industrial area in Biyaa district in southwestern Baghdad, killing up to five people and wounding 13, a police source told Xinhua on condition of anonymity.
A car bomb detonated in Karrada district in the southern part of Baghdad, killing up four people and wounding 11 others. another car bomb struck Karrada and killed four more people and wounded 16, the source said.
Meanwhile, a car and a roadside bomb went off in Ghadeer District in eastern Baghdad, killing four people and wounding 21 others, he said.
Another car bomb exploded in Husseiniyah district in northeastern Baghdad and killed three people and wounded 10, the source said.
Also in the capital, a car bomb went off in the afternoon in Sadr City neighborhood in the eastern part of Baghdad, killing three people and wounding 15 others, the source added.
Separately, six people were killed and 12 wounded in a roadside bomb explosion at an outdoor market in the neighborhood of Amil in the southern part of Baghdad, the source added.
In addition, six people were wounded when a roadside bomb ripped through Baghdad's southwestern suburb of Radhwaniyah, he said.
A seventh car bomb went off in Taji area, just north of Baghdad, killing three people and wounding 12 others, he added.
Another car bomb went off at Ma'amil area in eastern Baghdad, killed a civilian and wounded nine others, while a car bomb struck Sabie al-Bour suburb in northern Baghdad, killing three people and wounding 11 others, the source said.
A tenth car hit the Shiite neighborhood of al-Amin in eastern the capital, killing two people and wounding ten others, he added.
In Iraq's eastern province of Diyala, a civilian was killed and six were wounded in a car bomb explosion near a restaurant in the town of Jadidat al-Shat, some 30 km northwest of the provincial capital city of Baquba, which is about 65 km northeast of Baghdad, a provincial police source said.
Near Baquba, gunmen shot dead Ahmed al-Khafaji, head of the provincial media office for the leading Shiite party of the Islamic Supreme Council of Iraq (ISCI), headed by Shiite cleric Ammar al-Hakim, the source said.
Also in Diyala, two more people were shot dead by gunmen in two incidents near Baquba during the day, the source added.
No group has so far claimed responsibility for the deadly attacks, but the al-Qaida front in Iraq, in most cases, were responsible for suicide bombings in the country.
Sunday's attacks came amid escalation of sectarian tension between the Sunni and Shiite communities, which has been at its highest level since the US troops pulled out from the country at the end of 2011.
Iraq is witnessing its worst eruption of violence in recent years. According to the UN Assistance Mission for Iraq, 8,109 Iraqis were killed in the country from January to November this year.
