(Ahlul Bayt News Agency) Muslim relief organizations are scrambling to provide emergency assistance to Philippine families that have been affected by Typhoon Haiyan, one of the strongest storms in recorded history.
An estimated 10,000 people are presumed dead and more than 600,000 others have been left homeless by the typhoon, according to the United Nations.
In the coming days, the focus of relief efforts will be on making sure that people in hardest-hit areas have access to the bare basics: food, clean drinking water, shelter and medical supplies.
Despite great efforts of the relief organizations to raise funds for survivors and affected families, they are still in a dire need for help and support.
Below, is a brief report on achievements of the Muslim relief organizations helping survivors in the typhoon-ravaged Philippines.
United Muslim Relief
"United Muslim Relief, in cooperation and coordination with partner charities, has dispatched a $17 million medical shipment to the Philippines, currently en route. As part of its effort to unite NGO's, United Muslim Relief (UMR) strives to develop active partnerships with other relief agencies to serve and benefit all those who seek assistance. Towards that end, the first such partnership of American Muslim relief agencies includes Zakat Foundation, LIFE, and Baitulmaal-through which these agencies have formed a united response to the devastation in the Philippines".
Islamic Relief
Islamic Relief is providing essential shelter to families who lost their homes because of the storm. Tents have been distributed to 450 families on the island of Botigues, where Islamic Relief was the first aid agency to reach the community two weeks ago, and plan to supply the residents of Lipayran Island next. They have also distributed 2,080 tarpaulins to families in the Bantayan region.
As well as shelter items, They have continued to provide vital food aid reaching 15,000 more families, with plans to supply 5,000 more in coming days.
Muslim Aid
Muslim Aid’s recent work on the ground includes distributing over £40,000 worth of shelter kits and other food and non-food items for the typhoon affected people in the Philippines. This is the second phase of its emergency response.
In Barangay Abucay and Apitong, areas affected badly by the Typhoon, MA also distributed 500 relief packs. The MA team on the ground are conducting a needs assessment and collaborating with international NGO’s and local government for a coordinated and effective response to the disaster. The current priorities include shelter, hygiene, water and educational support. Since the emergency struck, Muslim Aid has helped thousands to receive relief items to help them survive through the difficulties.
