Bahraini Shia man 'Al Nashmi' died due to denial of medical treatment in jail

Bahraini Shiite man, Yousif Ali Abdullah Al Nashmi, 31, has martyred on Friday night due to denial from medical treatment while in jail. He had informed the prison officials of the severe pain he was suffering from, but they did not provide him with medical care.

(Ahlul Bayt News Agency) - Bahraini Shiite man, Yousif Ali Abdullah Al Nashmi, 31, has martyred on Friday night due to denial from medical treatment while in jail. He had informed the prison officials of the severe pain he was suffering from, but they did not provide him with medical care. Thus, we consider Al Nashmi a martyr.

Al Nashmi’s death is attributed to a rife problem of negligence toward the wounded and sick in prisons. Al Nashmi suffered for 7 weeks, but the Authorities only released him 3 days before his death when he entered into clinical death.

Al-Wefaq National Islamic Society said the Government is responsible for Al Nashmi’s death as the absence of necessary medical care for prisoners is an obvious issue. Moreover, Al Wefaq said the Government punishes the prisoners through its deliberate carelessness that has so far resulted in the death of two prisoners in custody.

It is clear that the Public Prosecution Office uses detention in systematic punishment.

According to his family,  the symptoms of his illness appeared since the first days of his arbitrary arrest on August 17, 2013.  He had asked for his medicine to be brought but the Authorities only allowed him to receive his medicine after 3 weeks. On the family’s 3rd visit, September 10, 2013, Yousif informed them that he suffering from exhaustion and dizziness.

Al-Nashmi told his family during the first visit about what he had endured. The family also noticed that his situation was worsening. He was not interacting normally and was discombobulated. His brother also said that the medicine he was given by the prison administration was causing him partial memory loss and making him say strange things. One of his released prison mates confirmed that and said that Yousif was sleepless, acting strange and complaining from headaches.

His family also confirmed that the Yousif was offended and beaten on the head on the day of his arrest, and that he wasn’t suffering from any illness before. The family also mentioned that they learned from prisoners  that prison officials did not take him to hospital when he repeatedly fell unconscious, and that he was given nerve pills.

Al Wasat local newspaper published on Wednesday 25th September 2013 that it had received a phone call from Salmaniya hospital by which it was informed that  Yousif Al Nashmi has been admitted to the intensive care unit. The paper said he was suffering from encephalitis and brain cancer which was the cause behind his coma. Therefore, doctors decided to take on a diagnostic cerebral angiography.

The family had pleaded to the Public Prosecution Office as well as the Interior Ministry for the release of Yousif, however, they did not receive any response until the illness took his life amid the continuing denial of medical care and treatment.

The body of Mr. Al-Nashmi was found to have torture marks in different areas including the head which raises the suspicion that torture may have had an effect on his condition. This can only be confirmed by a proper and independent forensic examination.
