(Ahlul Bayt News Agency) - Perlis (smallest state in Malaysia) is to closely monitor the activities of the Shia Muslims although they are not so apparent in the state, said Perlis Islamic Affairs Committee chairman Khairi Hasan.
One of the target groups was the international students in the state, he told Bernama.
Khairi said it had been determined that in Perlis only five people, among them civil servants, were actively involved in Shia activities and that they were being monitored by the committee and the Perlis Islamic Affairs and Malay Customs Council (MAIPs) as well as the Perlis Mufti Department.
He said Perlis had issued a 'fatwa' (edict) banning Shia practices and the Mufti Department had been instructed to submit a proposal to the state government on the prosecution of offenders.
The present approach was to seize leaflets on Shia teachings distributed by individuals, he said.
Khairi said he hoped that people with information on the distribution of Shia leaflets would report the matter for the State Islamic Affairs Department to take the appropriate action.
