Bahrain Opposition Suspends Dialog over Marzouq Arrest, Amnesty Urged Release

Bahraini opposition suspended its participation in the dialogue sessions after the arrest of the political assistant of the Secretary General of Islamic Wefaq association Khalil al-Marzouq on charges of "incitement to violence."

(Ahlul Bayt News Agency) - "The decision will be continuously reviewed in the light of the political and the legal developments," the opposition's statement read, after a press conference held in the headquarters of al-Wefaq Association, noting that the violations committed by the authorities exceeded  all the local and international expectations.

The statement considered that the arrest of al-Marzouq disdains the political norms and reflects the reluctance of the Ministry of Justice which is the competent ministry in the field of the political associations.

The political assistant of the Secretary General of Islamic Wefaq association Khalil al-Marzouq has been detained on allegations of "promoting terrorist acts."

Amnesty Urges Bahrain to Free Opposition Al-Marzaouq

Rights group Amnesty International has urged Bahrain to free al-Marzouq who was arrested by the authorities to days ago.

"Khalil al-Marzooq is a prisoner of conscience, imprisoned only for his vehement criticism of the government," the organization said in a statement late on Wednesday.

"He must be immediately and unconditionally released," Amnesty's Middle East and North Africa deputy director Hassiba Hadj said.

"His arrest is yet another blow to the National Dialogue which the Bahraini authorities have been flaunting as a reason to cancel the visit of the UN expert on torture to the country," said Hadj.
