Pro-Morsi demos held in several cities across Egypt

Demonstrations are under way in several cities across Egypt in support of deposed Egyptian President Mohamed Morsi.

(Ahlul Bayt News Agency) - The protests were held on Friday in several cities including Ismailiya, Suez, Assiut, Alexandria and the capital Cairo.

Chanting “Down With the Military Rule”, thousands of Morsi supporters demanded the reinstatement of Egypt’s first democratically elected president.

Clashes reportedly erupted outside Alexandria's Al-Qaed Ibrahim Mosque after people living in the second largest Egyptian city attacked pro-Morsi demonstrators.

Egypt’s Army has tightened security at several key protest sites in Cairo.

On Thursday, an anti-coup alliance in Egypt called on people to hold million-strong “People Protect Revolution” demonstrations following the Friday Prayers.

Referring to the 2011 revolution that toppled former Egyptian dictator Hosni Mubarak, Egypt’s Anti-Coup Pro-Legitimacy National Alliance urged Egyptians to continue their “daily demonstrations and peaceful protest activities …for the return of legitimacy, to safeguard the gains of January 25 Revolution.”

Morsi was removed from office by the country’s powerful military on July 3.

The army-appointed government has launched a bloody crackdown on Morsi supporters ever since his ouster and arrested more than 2,000 Muslim Brotherhood members.

About 1,000 people were killed in a week of clashes between Morsi supporters and security forces after police dispersed their protest camps in a fatal crackdown on August 14.
