Egypt new leaders prepare transition plan amid protests

Political changes are gathering momentum in Egypt as interim leaders are preparing a transition plan amid a new wave of nationwide protests across the North African country.

(Ahlul Bayt News Agency) - Egypt’s Interim Prime Minister Hazem al-Beblawi is selecting his cabinet ministers and is expected to announce the line-up, which will replace the government of ousted president, Mohamed Morsi, on Tuesday or Wednesday.

On Sunday, the former head of the UN nuclear agency and Nobel Peace Prize laureate Mohamed ElBaradei was sworn in as interim vice president for foreign relations.

The Muslim Brotherhood has refused to participate in the new government. The group has vowed to keep protesting until Morsi is restored to power.

Pro-Morsi demonstrators are preparing for fresh protests while his opponents are also set to rally in support of the military-backed interim government.

Meanwhile, the US Undersecretary of State Bill Burns was sent to Egypt on Monday for talks on the country’s political crisis.

Earlier on July 12, the US State Department spokeswoman, Jen Psaki, said Washington wanted “an end to restrictions on Mr. Morsi's whereabouts.”

The interim leaders of Egypt’s military-backed administration say Morsi is being held in a “safe place, for his own safety.”

Egypt plunged into violence after the country’s powerful military ousted Morsi, suspended the constitution, and dissolved the parliament on July 3.

The army declared chief justice of Egypt’s Supreme Constitutional Court, Adly Mansour, as interim president on July 4.

Since then, Egypt has been the scene of rival rallies and clashes between thousands of the supporters and opponents of the ousted president.
